Things To Know About Freedompop Before You Subscribe

FreedomPop is one of the dozens of Mobile Virtual Networks Operators that operate in the USA (otherwise known as an MVNO for short).

In the case of FreedomPop, it is an MVNO that formerly operated as a Sprint MVNO, although is now an AT&T MVNO that is owned by Red Pocket Mobile.

Besides using cellular data networks for service, Wi-Fi can also be used for phone calls and messaging. FreedomPop’s legacy service was primarily VoIP based and for some customers, this caused a little bit of latency while on phone calls.  When the latency is too high, it may take a split second for what is said by one person to be heard by the person on the other end of the line.  Sometimes this leads to people talking over one another. This problem along with the inactivity fees described below that FreedomPop used to charge for caused a lot of negativity around the brand. However, in 2019, the FreedomPop brand was acquired by Red Pocket Mobile.

Red Pocket went on to implement changes with the brand. Some were viewed positively and some negatively. A positive change is that VoIP is no longer the primary method for voice calls. Voice calls now work the same as any other provider.

One negative change is that Red Pocket removed a popular FreedomPop plan that included 200 minutes, 200 texts, and up to 500MB of data. That plan has been replaced with a free plan that includes WiFi-only calling with 25MB of data and 10 text messages. However, a free plan with 100 minutes, 100 text messages, and 100MB of data is available exclusively at Target.

FreedomPop was founded in the year 2012 by Stephen Stokols and Steven Sesar.

About FreedomPop’s Plans

The company claims to be the first in the world to offer a totally free phone plan.

The company’s free cell phone plan is designed to up-sell customers to paying service.

Free Plan Inactivity Fees

Keep in mind that at least one phone call using your FreedomPop number must be made every 60 days to keep your line active on a free plan. Furthermore, FreedomPop may charge a 1¢ line maintenance fee to your credit card for inactivity.  FreedomPop defines inactivity on a free plan as

“you (a) do not make a payment for excess usage, value added services, or other services in any particular month and (b) use less than 5mb or make fewer then five (5 outgoing) calls in any given month, FreedomPop reserves the right to charge you a $0.01 maintenance fee (“Maintenance Fee”) to keep your FreedomPop Account active.”

Furthermore,

  • If you use more than 10 minutes and 10 text messages you will automatically be billed for an additional 100 minutes and 10 text messages for $2.
  • If you use more than 25MB during a billing cycle, you will automatically be upgraded to 50 minutes, 50 texts, and 500MB of data for $8

The auto top-ups described are only applicable to the FreedomPop free plan sold through the FreedomPop website. The Target exclusive plan does not have auto top-ups.

Both free plans may be billed for taxes and fees in some locations. If there are any in your location they will likely be pennies.

Supported Phones And BYOD Devices

Most AT&T compatible phones will work with FreedomPop as long as they are out of contract and all financial obligations on the phone have been met. Most T-Mobile phones are also compatible provided that they have been unlocked. Universally unlocked phones from manufacturers such as Motorola, Apple, and Samsung are compatible with the network.

Only Apple iPhones are available for purchase through the FreedomPop phone store.

Where To Buy Service Plans And SIM Cards

FreedomPop service plans and SIMs can be purchased directly from the FreedomPop website.  The brand can also be found at Best Buy, Target, and, Walmart.
